Chinese Grocery Store Worker Project – Improving Work in the Ethnic Economy
This is a 18-month partnership project with OCASI (Ontario Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants) that is funded through the Decent Work Fund by the Atkinson Foundation. This project uses a model of engagement that combines education, leadership, research and relationship development with workers in the GTA’s Chinese ethnic grocery store sector and ethnic economy at large.
Our Project Lead & Organizer, Justin Kong will work with a team of Youth Organizers and Worker Researchers, who will go through a series of training on worker rights, community-based research methods and mobilizing strategies. This team will coordinate and implement an effective outreach plan in order to engage workers in the ethnic economy. The goal is to collect information on the current conditions of work in the Chinese ethnic economy broadly but also with a focus on grocery store workers. We aim to strengthen our connection with workers in the Chinese ethnic economy and build towards possibilities of future mobilization.
The Steering Committee for the project includes: OCASI, Metro Toronto Chinese and Southeast Asian Legal Clinic, and the Workers’ Action Centre.
